Who we are and what we're about.
We are a small farm with large ambitions to provide quality food with exceptional flavor to as many individuals and families as we can at a fair price. We care for and raise all of our animals in a low stress environment. They are raised with love and we adhere to high standards of animal welfare. At our farm we welcome all questions about how we do business and are very transparent. We have an open door policy to all of our customers and animal rights groups by appointment. We have streamlined the process of buying from a local farm to make it less intimidating for first timers and enjoyable for seasoned buyers. Customer service, honesty, and transparency are our main priorities when working with the customer. We work for you and never forget it. Without our customers we would not be afforded the opportunity to pursue our passion for raising high quality pork and chicken.
How the process works when you order a whole or half pig from us.
Never ordered before?
Don't worry we have made it really easy!
It starts with you filling out the bottom portion of our order form and returning it by mail, with a $50 deposit if you are ordering hog. No deposit is required with your chicken only order.
When we receive your order we will contact you to let you know we have it and answer any questions you may have. At this point you now have a pig living the good life at Bennett Farms. Now all there is for you to do is wait until November 2nd for your order.
We send out a spring/summer newsletter to all of our customers with any information that may be relevant for order pick-up and to update you on how things are going around the farm. We welcome you to come out and visit the pigs. Bring the kids and make a field trip out of it. Just call ahead to set up a time.
The next step will happen in the middle of October. You will receive a phone call from the butcher that will be processing your hog. Our butcher is very easy to work with and will walk you through all of the cut options for the processing of your hog. There are many ways to have a pig processed and they will ask you questions pertaining to every cut of meat and what your preferences are. (Ex: ham sizes, bacon and pork chop thickness, bone-in or boneless, roast, pork steaks, ribs, bulk sausage seasonings, and brats)
All of the butchering is already included in your purchase price.
The last step in the process is pick-up of your order at our farm which will be Saturday, November 2nd, 2019. I will call you the week before with your exact total due at pickup, minus the deposit you have already paid.
We accept a check, cash or credit/debit card at pickup.
Your order will be in boxes when you receive it but if you wish to bring blankets or coolers to insulate it for your drive home that is a good idea. (For reference a whole processed hog is about the volume of 3 laundry baskets.)
And that's it!
Chicken orders can be picked up anytime with advance notice or picked up with hog orders.
All of our current customers will receive an order flyer in the mail automatically the following year.
How they are raised and what they are fed.
We select only heritage breed and heritage cross bred pigs suited for life outside. We utilize a rotational pasture method- we rotate them to a fresh piece of land every two weeks (or sooner if the land dictates). This is accomplished by using portable waterers, electric fencing, shelters, and feeders. This is done for three reasons. First, it protects the soil from over abuse and properly distributes manure. Second, it ensures fresh and abundant vegetation for the pigs to browse/graze. This adds large amounts of omega 3's and flavor to your pork. Third, and most important, it breaks up the parasite life cycle and helps us keep the pigs healthy! Our pigs do not return to the same pasture any sooner than 4 months from its last use.
Because pigs cannot get all of the nutrition they need to grow from pasture alone (technically they can but it would take about 6-7 years and unbridled access to huge amounts of land) their diet is supplemented with an 18% protein, non-medicated, and non-GMO grain ration.
We take a natural approach to treating our animals in the rare circumstance that they become ill. Most of the time we can get them well without antibiotics. We will not allow an animal suffer or die unnecessarily, so if the ailment can only be treated with antibiotics we will use them. If this happens it is noted and the animal is not sold as antibiotic free.
All of our pigs receive de-wormer which is necessary for the health of the animals, even in organic operations.
Whole roaster chicken:
Our chicks are kept inside with supplemental heat until about 2 weeks old. They are then moved to the pasture in mobile, open floored pens that are moved daily to a fresh patch to give them access to insects and green forage. The open floored pen provides them with shelter from inclement weather, shade, and protection from predators. They are fed a 19% protein (free choice) grain ration that is non-medicated and non-GMO.
We grow them to be about 4 to 5 lbs. (after processing). However, if you want a larger bird just ask!
We process the chickens on farm (using an on farm exemption). This means the birds are never stressed with transport prior to processing and, truthfully, we just don't trust anyone to do as good of a job as we do here. There is a comfort that comes from knowing that we personally inspected every bird that is going out to our customers from start to finish.
